Two Drown In Freak Accident

Tragedy struck at the Beach Wall Dam in Lightfoot on Friday when a surf rafter capsized, drowning two young men in the process.

The dead were identified as Ricky “Stumpy” DeSilva 19 and Jermaine “Stitch” Benjamin 21 of Potters Village.

The Caribbean Media Corporation has lived to broadcast another day.

At a meeting on Wednesday, the regional broadcaster's board of directors decided "that the operations of the regional media outlet will continue for the immediate future," according to a press release which CMC issued on Friday night.

Soon after the 2004 General elections it would be fair to say that the Antigua Labour Party (ALP)/Birds were ‘history’ never to be heard of again, at least not in the near future.

The ALP/Birds ruled Antigua & Barbuda for 28 years from 1996 to 2004.

Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP) Leon “Chaku” Symister said the party is set for the official launch of the big blue wave Command Centre and campaign on Sunday.  

“We don’t expect because we (the government) have done well, they are going to close their eyes and vote for the UPP. No that’s why we have to check for ourselves and knock on every door; we have the interest of people at heart.” Symister said.

Activity at the Soufrière Hills Volcano increased significantly during the past week with lava extrusion on the top, north, west and south-west side of the dome, as well as further ash venting at the top of the dome and pyroclastic flows down on Chances Peak’s side, Plymouth and in Tyers Ghaut.

BANGKOK — Police forensic investigators sifted through the charred remains of an upscale Bangkok nightclub Thursday, seeking clues to a blaze that killed 58 revellers ringing in the New Year and injured 223. Relatives and friends gathered at Bangkok hospitals and outside the popular nightspot desperate for news of loved ones lost or injured in the inferno that gutted the two-storey building.

Police said a Singaporean national was among the dead and scores of other foreigners -- some from Australia, France and Japan -- were hospitalized.

Even after the Electoral Commission held a news conference to dismiss claims of a flawed voters list, Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP) Leon Chaku Symister maintains that there are certain irregularities on the list that must be addressed.
