homecoming08preliminariesoct14005 Tuesday, October 14th began what is promising to be the biggest Independence Home Coming Queen competition here in Antigua. The evening kicked off with a musical prelude of the national anthem, sung by one Philton Farrel, after which the hosts, Somoya Kirby and Bernard Gould then came and introduced the judges.

The delegates for this preliminary presented themselves to the viewing audience marching to the song, "This Feeling" by our own, Tizzy. They were:

1. Dana Barnes  2. Asha Roberts 3. Shanice Gregory 4. Azara Lavi  5. Analicia Powell

Shortly after their on stage pre-presentation, Shiva's School of Dance also did a special that kept the crowd entertained while the girls went and prepared for the swim wear segment.

After the swim wear segment, there was also another short Steel Pan rendition by Sakia Martin who did a medley of songs from various genres.

Each delegate was given 10 mins to do a performing act which was the highlight of the evening.

First on stage was delegate one, Dana Barnes. The title of her act was themed, "Rape". She described how she was seduced then raped by a man who came through her bedroom window, then give birth to his child 9 months later.

Delegate two, Asha Roberts did "Woman Scorned by Drugs". This describes having not knowing one's parents, turning to drugs and the streets for comfort, almost being raped, and then being able to turn things around to now have a better life.

Shanice Gregory did a number on "Aids", one of our favourite and popular topic while Azara Lavi, did her thing on "Crime and Violence", another troubling topic we debate daily.  She described having a son who is on a destructive path and being involved in gangs, causing crime such as drive by shootings, larceny, and how she prays daily that he gets out and changes his life.

Last there was Analicia Powell who did "Women Prostitution". A theme that is sometimes ignored by many. So she tried to demonstrate and educate as to some of the reasons women turn to prostitution; be it for drugs, money, pleasure and also the effects of these acts.

Later in the evening there was the question and answer segment by which each delegate was given two questions to answer.
