INDEPENDENCE DAY TOURNAMENT….The Standford 20/20 for $20 million super series, the highlight of which is the match between the Stanford Super Stars and an English squad on Independence Day, has received strong support from Minister of Culture Eleston Adams. At a media briefing held recently at the Culture House, Minister Adams stated his position on the tournament, citing that it would bring excellent press coverage to Antigua and Barbuda. He recalled the murders of the British couple a few months back which, he said, brought the nation much negative publicity that affected the tourism industry. He believes, however, that the competition would bring the island much positive publicity in the international press.
While he understands some Antiguans and Barbudans may be against the tournament, Minister Adams’ belief in the good it will bring remains unchanged. He also noted that the upcoming Independence activities would be showcased for the audience, both those present at the game and those following through the media, at each game. This, he feels, will also promote the nation as the wider, international audience will get to see more of it than what has been shown in the press over the past few months.
